Hutchinson received the seventh seed in Section 2A and will open the tournament today against second-seeded Delano.
The Tigers, 7-16-2, closed the regular season with a split last week, beating Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 5-2 Feb. 13 before falling to Princeton 5-1 on Thursday.
Beating LDC gave Hutchinson its only win in the final five games of the regular season. Included in that run was a 6-0 loss to Delano Feb. 6 at Burich Arena.
Delano, 16-8-1, won the Wright County Conference title with an 8-1 record and it was ranked eighth in Class A in the most recent state rankings. Delano won four in a row to close out the regular season, including a 2-1 win Saturday over Northfield, which was ranked No. 6 in last week’s state rankings.
Delano gives Section 2A two of the state’s top 10 Class A teams, with fifth-ranked Orono receiving the top seed in the section. The Spartans open section play against No. 8 seed Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato at 7 p.m. today.
Other Section 2A quarterfinals have third-seeded Minneapolis playing host to Mound Westonka/Watertown-Mayer at 6 p.m. today, and No. 5 Breck meeting No. 4 Providence Academy at 7 p.m.
Section semifinals are set for Saturday, with the finals Feb. 28, all at St. Louis Park Rec Center.
Hutchinson’s three-goal outburst in the third period lifted it to a win over Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato Feb. 12 at Burich Arena. It also gave the Tigers the Tendy Trophy — a traveling trophy between the rivals that was initiated three seasons ago in memory of former LDC player Dylan Falling.
The two teams battled through a tight two periods, with Hutchinson claiming a 2-1 lead on the strength of goals by Emmett Reiter and Manny Pearce.
The Tigers took control in the third, however, as Pearce scored his second of three goals just 1:46 into the period. LDC got a goal back on a power play late in the third before Easton Mallak put Hutchinson back up by two goals and Pearce got his third into an empty net.
Princeton 5, Hutchinson 1
Princeton took a 3-0 lead early in the second period and cruised to the win, outshooting Hutchinson 39-28 Thursday.
Pearce got the Tigers’ lone goal, giving him 13 on the season. Pearce ranks second on the team in scoring with 23 points. Emmett Reiter, with 19 goals and 28 points, leads the team.
