Ice fishing

Liberalized fishing is open from Dec. 20 to Feb. 28 on High Island Lake in Sibley County.

All species of fish may be taken by licensed residents for their personal use in any quantity and in any manner except with the use of seines, hoopnets, fyke nets or explosives.

Rough fish such as bullheads, carp, suckers and buffalo fish may be sold. Gill nets must have metal tags affixed stating the operator's name and address and must be attached to one end on the float line near the first float.

Anglers must obey all laws regarding trespassing on private property. Discarding fish on the shore or ice is illegal.

Anglers should stay off the ice until it is at least 4 inches thick. No ice is 100 percent safe, and wearing a life jacket and carrying ice picks and rope are recommended.
