A talented field and a couple runners not feeling in top form meant a ninth-place finish for Litchfield during its own Litchfield Invitational Thursday.
The Dragons finished with 237 points in the 15-team meet, which was won by Delano with 56 points. Dassel-Cokato finished just ahead of Litchfield with 201 points, while Eden Valley-Watkins was two spots back with 284 points.
As she has for much of this season, eighth-grader Elsa Helstrom led the way for Litchfield, earning a 14th-place finish with a time of 20:07.9. Hutchinson’s Isabelle Schmitz, runner-up in last year’s Class AA state meet and champion in 2021, won the meet in 18:11.7.
Seniors Shelby Dengerud and Camryn Iverson, running in the last meet on a home course, had big finishes for the Dragons. Dengerud finished 53rd overall in 22:07.9, while Iverson was 59th in 22:25.6.
Sophomore Abby Thoma added a 64th-place finish in 22:43.1 for the Dragons, and senior Abby Woelfel rounded out the scoring in 80th (23:18.2). Kimberlyn Case (83rd, 23:22.1) and Katelyn Guggemos (84th, 23:23.9) also competed for Litchfield.
Sophomore August Swenson’s 14th place finish helped Litchfield take ninth place in its own invitational meet Thursday at Litchfield Golf Course.
Orono won the 18-team meet with 49 points, while Litchfield had 257. Dassel-Cokato finished third with 76 points, and Eden Valley-Watkins was 13th with 340.
Swenson’s time of 17:14.6 over the 5,000-meter course put in about a minute and a half behind Annandale junior Salvador Wirth, who finished fourth in the Class AA state meet last season and third in 2021. With’s time of 15:43.2 put him nearly 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher.
Freshmen Judah Allen and Xander Chvatal finished 49th and 57th, respectively, for Litchfield. Allen turned in a time of 18:14.7, while Chvatal finished in 18:32.
Senior Ethan Knudsen was next for the Dragons, finished in 66th place with a time of 18:51.6. Sophomore Gideon Boerema rounded out the scoring with a 79th place place finish.
Sophomore Lincoln Dille was 86th in 19:26, and junior William Carlson took 108th in 20:11.7.
