Keeping up with winter

While cleaning up the roads impacted by the latest snow storm, the Minnesota Department of Transportation is preparing for a second round of snowfall forecasted for southwest Minnesota.

The National Weather Service predicts 4 to 6 inches of snowfall accumulation coming by this afternoon through Thursday. Meeker and McLeod counties are included in a winter weather advisory for the area.

Many roads in Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Meeker, McLeod, Murray, Pipestone, Redwood, Renville and Yellow Medicine counties remain partially to completely covered due to cold temperatures which slow the effectiveness of road treatments.

Motorists should expect slippery roads and limited visibility with blowing and drifting snow. Temperatures well be below zero by Friday morning could worsen road conditions. MnDOT encourages motorists to use caution and practice good winter driving skills.

Two of the most important things that motorists can do while driving on ice- and snow-covered roads are slow down and manually turn on their headlights. Ironically, not all automatic headlights work when it’s snowing or foggy.
