Flag and Bible

I have lived in Hutchinson since I was discharged from the United States Infantry in 1958. I have come to love this community and the friends I have made since then. A lot of us grew up together and watched our children, grandchildren and even our great-grandchildren grow up. We indeed became friends and neighbors. We shared joy and sorrow together. It was a good Christian church community. But things are changing, some good and some not so good.

Now to the heart of this letter, and I will speak my heart and not mince words.

I am appalled at the actions of our mayor and City Council. It is a slap in the face to all of us who hold prayer and worship of our one true God in high esteem.

Does anyone think for a moment that during the Dakota Uprising, the citizens in the stockade, in what is now Library Square, debated if they should pray? When Pearl Harbor was bombed, did we debate whether or not we should pray? Or do we think that the only time we should pray and worship God is when disaster strikes?

Hutchinson is growing, and things seem to be going relatively well. So now should we put God on the shelf and say, “We will call on you when we need you”?

Shame on us!

There are some council members that need to be replaced. Election time is the time to do just that. Let’s use prayer and the voting booth to let our voices be heard.
