9-11 mobile memorial in Winsted

The 9-11 Mobile Memorial semitrailer was given a warm welcome Thursday as it rolled into Winsted.

The 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. is a month away. Those who would like to pay their respects earlier and learn a bit about the history of that fateful day may do so this weekend at the 9-11 mobile memorial in Winsted.

This tribute on wheels is free and open to the public from 2 to 8 p.m., Friday through Sunday in the Millerbernd Manufacturing lot at 622 Sixth St. S., Winsted.

The mobile memorial is a 53-foot semitrailer that transforms into a 1,000-square-foot exhibit designed to educate people about the events of that day. It provides interactive education, artifacts such as steel beams from the towers, documentary videos and recordings of the first responder radio transmissions.

The memorial is sponsored by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which was founded to honor the memory of Siller, a New York City firefighter who died responding to the attacks that day.
