A Hutchinson police officer tased a man who charged him during a confrontation Saturday.

According to a report, at approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a report of a domestic assault in progress at Casey’s General Store in Hutchinson. Officers arrived and spoke to the victim, who stated she and her boyfriend were arguing about infidelity when she pulled over and told him to get out of the vehicle.

She said the suspect, Jacob Thomas Dahlheimer, 32, of Willmar, punched her in the face, broke her cell phone and left. The victim said Dahlheimer had brandished a handgun during the assault and tucked it into his waistband.

When officers found Dahlheimer two blocks away on Lindy Lane, they believed he had a firearm. According to the report, the suspect appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance when he was found. He allegedly made several threats against the arresting officer and the officer’s family, and appeared to be aggressive. He allegedly reached for his waistband before charging toward an officer, telling the officer to shoot him.

The officer withdrew until he was able to holster his firearm, and instead used a taser on the suspect. Dahlheimer was medically cleared and taken to McLeod County Jail.

“This is a perfect example of how quickly an incident can go from zero to 60 in seconds,” said Hutchinson police Sgt. Ben Erlandson. “Our senses were heightened due to the nature of the original call. Officer (Brad) Hemling conducted himself in a professional, calm manner and used his training and instincts to end the incident with only minor injuries to the suspect. It could have easily turned out much worse.”

No handgun was recovered following the incident.

Police requested charges of domestic assault, terroristic threats, obstructing the legal process and assault on a peace officer. He has been charged with felony domestic assault by the McLeod County Attorney’s Office.

Dahlheimer was also found to have a warrant for his arrest from Kandiyohi County for an alleged probation violation for an original offense of domestic assault.
