Glencoe police responded to a report of a weapons violation at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School this morning, but when officers arrived they discovered the student in question had a toy gun.
Police were called at 7:48 a.m. and told a male juvenile had a firearm in his backpack. When officers arrived, along with McLeod County Sheriff's Office deputies, school staff had contained the individual. Officers determined the item was not a real firearm.
Police continue to investigate the incident. A report will be forwarded to the McLeod County Attorney for a decision as to if there will be charges.
"There is no ongoing threat," said Captain Tony Padilla of the Glencoe Police Department. "Our plan is to meet with the school next week to make sure we're doing everything right in our policies."
Superintendent Chris Sonju said that from the perspective of the school, the incident will be handled according to school policy. Data privacy laws limit how much information can be shared about a student.
"The situation was dealt with properly and all students are safe," he said.
An email sent to parents this morning said school will run as scheduled. The item brought by a student is described in the email as a "fake gun/cap gun."
