George “Gene” Remund, 93, passed away peacefully Oct. 18 in Waconia. A celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Faith Lutheran Church in Waconia. Visitation will begin an hour before the service and lunch will follow.

Gene was born July 18, 1930, to George and Ida (Folsom) Remund near Wilmot, South Dakota. Gene graduated from Corona High School in 1948. On July 1, 1954, he married Barbara Ferber. For many years, he ran the family farm near Corona, South Dakota, where he and Barbara raised their four children. After a brief time serving in the Army, he was honorably discharged in 1956.

In 1978, the Remunds relocated to Hutchinson, where Gene worked at Great Plains and Simonson’s Lumber. After retirement, he continued building sheds and using his handyman skills to help his community.

He lived his life in service to his family, community and Creator. Through the years, he was a committed member of several Lutheran churches, where he volunteered as an usher, committee member and Bible study participant. Gene was a board member of the Rural Electric Association and traveled around the country to conferences and policy meetings. He also spent years volunteering with Kiwanis.

Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman; he passed this love of the outdoors on to family and friends. Sports was another hobby, playing town ball into adulthood and later cheering on the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Lynx. He was frequently found in the audience and stands of his kids’ and grandkids’ activities. He loved his family and left behind many wonderful memories as dad and gramps.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Michael and Marcel Remund of Syracuse Nebraska, Kathleen and Richard Lane of Blaine, Karen and Dale Cardinal of Young America and Ruth and Mike Johnson of Cape Coral, Florida; grandchildren, Meagan (Alex) Elliott, Christa (Darek) Reader, Eliza (Dan McInnis) Johnson, Anna (Tony) Witt, Zachary Johnson, Michala (Nathan) Hueber, Andrew (Kaylie Brazil) Cardinal, Abby (Tyler) Bitz, Emily Cardinal; seven great-grandchildren, Zella and Leo Elliott, Eloise and Harrison Reader, Louie and Georgia McInnis, Isaac Hueber; sister-in-law, Susan Bartholomew of Princeton; brother-in-law, Larry Ferber of Corona South Dakota; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Sheila Ferber of Omaha, Nebraska; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters Joyce (Storsteen) and Shirley (Schreiner).

Gene’s family extends their deep gratitude to the staff at Auburn Home in Waconia, for their care in his final years of life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, where Gene and Barb were members and frequent visitors.
