Hutchinson Police Services reported the following incidents:
DEC. 20: At 5:08 p.m., a disturbance was reported at Echo Manor Apartments, 220 Echo Circle. While the officers were en route, they were notified that one of the individuals had a warrant. When they arrived, they listened and could not hear any noises from the apartment. Before they could knock, the door opened and a woman was leaving. She admitted she knew she had a warrant and would be arrested so she was trying to leave before they arrived. The disturbance was only a verbal disagreement between her and a man. The dispatcher confirmed two warrants for Desirey Ginger York, 36, of Garden City, Minnesota. One was a gross misdemeanor body-only warrant out of Sibley County for failure to comply with conditions of release. The other was a warrant out of McLeod County for failure to appear on an original charge of felony fifth-degree possession. She was arrested and taken to the McLeod County Jail.
DEC. 21: At 12:17 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop for a broken taillight and erratic driving at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Main Street. As the officer approached the driver's window, he could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle. He believed the driver was under the influence of alcohol and/or a controlled substance. Dennis Patrick Johnson, 48, of Scottsdale, Arizona, was identified and found to have a warrant out of McLeod County for an original charge of gross misdemeanor DWI and misdemeanor open bottle with $500 cash bail or $2,500 bond. The vehicle was searched and various controlled substances and firearms were found. He had a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent and allegedly admitted to smoking methamphetamine and marijuana so he was taken to Hutchinson Hospital with a search warrant for blood. He has three previous DUIs, two in Minnesota and one in Arizona. The vehicle was towed and inventoried and found was a baggie with a white powder, which field-tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed 2.9 grams and cannabis oil, which field-tested positive for THC. Johnson was charged with felony fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine; gross misdemeanor fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance, marijuana oil; felony first-degree DWI; and felony first-degree DWI, combination of alcohol and a controlled substance.
At 5 a.m., a burglary was reported in the 900 block of Seventh Avenue Northwest. The officer spoke with the victims who said they had gone to bed at 10 p.m. and were wakened by a car alarm around 1:30 a.m. When the man got up at 4 a.m., he could not find his wallet. As he searched the house, he found the service door from the garage was ajar but did not notice any forced entry. Missing was a wallet with cash and cards and a black and white purse with a wallet, cash and cards. Total value of stolen items was $110. Officers then responded to a burglary two houses away.
At 5:37 a.m., another burglary was reported in the 900 block of Seventh Avenue Northwest. The victims said they went to bed at 10 p.m. and believed they had closed the garage door. Their dog woke them up at 2 a.m. with howling but they did not investigate. When the man went to leave, he noticed a full tote of Christmas gifts was missing from the vehicle. Total value of presents was $410. There are no suspects but it is believed the two burglaries are related.
At 7:23 a.m., a crash occurred at the intersection of Main Street and Second Avenue North. Roger Janshen of Little Falls was southbound on Main in a 2012 Peterbilt. Lori Johnson of Darwin attempted to merge her 2017 Ford into the left lane to go straight when she hit Janshen. The lug nuts from the semitrailer tire put a hole in her rear quarter panel, causing moderate damage. There was no damage to the truck.
At 10:12 a.m., a theft was reported in the 400 block of Maryland Street. The officer spoke with the victims who said their 2005 Dodge was parked in the driveway when it was broken into overnight. Taken was a $20 wallet containing $20, credit cards and a driver's license. A credit card was used in Apple Valley for a total of $1,181.56. Surveillance video was requested.
DEC. 22: At 7:43 a.m., property damage was reported at Riverside Park. An officer spoke to a park employee who said damage had been done to an art sculpture by the Luce Line State Trail. The employee said there was a suspicious vehicle in the area but is unsure if the occupants did the damage. The artist was contacted and damage is estimated at $150.
At 7:30 p.m., a crash occurred at the intersection of Denver Avenue and Montreal Street. John Bollig of Hutchinson was northbound on Montreal in a 2004 Volkswagen. Seth Grob of Hutchinson was eastbound on Denver in a 2006 Dodge. Both stopped at the stop signs and then Bollig attempted to make a left onto Denver and struck Grob. There was moderate damage to both vehicles and Bollig was cited for failure to yield right of way.
At 11:12 p.m., a theft was reported from an apartment building at 1095 Jefferson St. S.E. The building manager told the officer that washers and dryers on the first floor were tampered with and quarters were taken. There are no suspects and a value has not been determined.
DEC. 23: At 12:04 p.m., an officer met with an individual in the lobby of the police department who wanted to report her wallet stolen. She said she was shopping at Dollar Tree when her wallet was taken out of her purse. While she was looking around the store, someone came in with a wallet that was found in the parking lot, which belonged to someone else. The wallet containing cash, credit cards and a checkbook was valued at $160. There are no suspects.
At 3:20 p.m., a crash occurred in the Liquor Hutch parking lot. Laurie Schumaci of Winsted backed her 1992 Toyota into a 2015 Ford driven by Ashley Berney of Darwin. There was minor damage to both vehicles.
DEC. 24: At 10:54 a.m. a crash occurred on Denver Avenue between Aldi and Walmart. Amanda Bunch of Hutchinson stopped her 2012 Chevrolet at the stop sign while leaving Aldi's parking lot. She believed it was a four-way stop so she proceeded and struck a 2017 Honda driven by Steven Mulder of Hutchinson. Bunch was cited for no insurance and failure to yield right of way.
DEC. 25: At 11:05 a.m., a single-vehicle crash occurred at Advantage Recreation, 306 State Highway 7 E. Ross Swartz was eastbound on Highway 7 in a 2005 GMC and attempted to merge left where the road goes from four lanes to two lanes. The other vehicles did not allow him to merge so he tried to stop on the shoulder but lost control on the ice. He went over the curb and struck the building, causing severe damage to his vehicle, which needed to be towed. There was also damage to the building and the owner was notified.
DEC. 26: At 8:32 p.m., a hit-and-run crash occurred in the Goodwill parking lot. Madeline Freund of Hutchinson was backing her 2000 Buick out of a parking spot when a van backed out, hit her and left the scene, causing minor damage.
DEC. 27: At 10:43 p.m., a single-vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Edmonton Avenue and Montreal Street. A 16-year-old Hutchinson boy was eastbound on Edmonton in a 2002 Hyundai when he lost control on a curve, went over the curb, and sheered off a tree. The driver had a scratch to his forehead from the airbag but the parents signed off, denying an ambulance ride to the hospital. The vehicle was severely damaged and needed to be towed. The boy was cited for failure to drive with due care.
At 11:34 p.m., a crash occurred at the intersection of South Grade Road and State Highway 15 South. Geri Dolney of Hutchinson attempted to cross over Highway 15 in a 2016 Buick and said she did not see any oncoming vehicles. Jennifer Nick of Arlington was southbound on Highway 15 and said Dolney did not stop at the stop sign. Dolney struck Nick, causing moderate damage to Nick's vehicle and severe damage to Dolney's and both needed to be towed. Dolney was cited for failure to yield right of way.
DEC. 28: At 7:59 a.m., an officer was asked to contact a park employee for a report of property damage at Rotary Park. The employee said the bathroom window on the north side of the restrooms was broken, causing $300 in damage. The Parks Department is looking into alternatives to windows since this seems to happen often.
At 2:37 p.m., a crash occurred in the Burger King parking lot. Edward Bishman of Hutchinson was backing out of a parking spot in a 1996 Chevrolet. He backed into a parked 2004 Volkswagen registered to Brandon Haugen of Hutchinson, causing minor damage to both vehicles. Bishman says he couldn't see the white car against the snow-covered ground.
At 3:22 p.m., a hit-and-run crash occurred in the Walmart parking lot. Massimo Giannetti of Arlington parked his 2007 Toyota from 11 to 11:30 a.m. and then left. He later noticed minor damage to the left rear of the vehicle and told the officer it must have happened at Walmart.
At 3:27 p.m., a crash occurred in the Hutchinson Health Clinic parking lot. Janet Krasen of Hutchinson was driving through the parking lot in a 2017 Lexus and Timothy Froemming of Dassel was driving in the parking lot in a 2003 Buick. There was a parked truck that blocked their vision and they collided, causing minor damage to both vehicles.
At 6:23 p.m., a warrant arrest was made in the 500 block of Madsen Avenue while an officer was attempting to serve papers. As the officer approached the front door, a man was standing on the steps and said he could take the papers. The officer ran the name and a warrant out of McLeod County was found for failure to provide proof of insurance. Logan Grant Aagaard, 20, of Hutchinson was taken to the police station, booked and released after paying the $200 cash bail.
DEC. 29: At 2:14 p.m., a crash occurred at the intersection of Main Street and Fourth Avenue Northeast. Cody Johnson of Dassel was stopped at the intersection facing north in a 2016 Chevrolet. Brittany Hart of Hector was attempting to stop behind Johnson and couldn't, due to icy roads, and slid into him. There was moderate damage to Hart's vehicle and no damage to Johnson's.
At 9:23 p.m., a crash occurred at the intersection of Boulder Street and Boulder Circle. A 17-year-old Hutchinson boy was turning left onto Boulder Circle in a 1997 Toyota. He slid on the ice and struck a parked 2003 Volkswagen driven by Matthew Binder of Hutchinson, who was dropping off a passenger. The boy was cited for failure to drive with due care.
DEC. 30: At 3:42 p.m., a theft was reported at Walmart. The officer met with the victim in the automotive department who said she had $240 in cash and a Visa card with $18 left on it in her pocket. At some point it fell out and someone took it. Video surveillance is being reviewed.
JAN. 1: At 10:20 p.m., an officer was called to the police station to submit a preliminary breath test to Dacotah Joseph Thompson, 23, of Hutchinson. He blew a 0.083 and admitted to drinking. The officer called the McLeod County Jail, which requested he be taken into custody. Thompson was arrested and taken to jail for failing the test.
