Major reconstruction of Century Avenue Southeast is set for this summer, and Hutchinson City Engineer Kent Exner reviewed the proposed construction phasing plan during the Feb. 27 City Council meeting.
The first phase of the plan, which is estimated to take about seven weeks, is scheduled to begin May 14 and coincide with the end of classes at Ridgewater College.
This phase includes the section of the road starting at the west end of Century Avenue where it intersects with State Highway 15, and goes east just past the entry to parking lots for the college and Hutchinson Health. “Substantial completion” of this phase to be open for traffic is set on or before June 29. That includes the asphalt base, traffic signal, concrete walk and pavement markings.
The second phase of the project, which picks up where the first phase ended and continues to the east side of the intersection with Bradford Street Southeast, will take about four weeks to complete. It is scheduled to begin about July 2 and interim completion is scheduled for July 27. That means it will have a gravel surface but be open to traffic.
The third phase of construction starts east of the intersection with Bradford Street and finishes up at the intersection with Jefferson Street Southeast. The timeline for this phase is about four weeks, starting around July 30 and interim completion at about Aug. 24.
The last phase of the project, including trail construction, landscaping, asphalting, final restoration and cleanup, is set to be completed by Oct. 12.
