Child care

Hutchinson Economic Development Authority has launched a new grant program to support childcare businesses in the city.

Up to $2,000 is available for any childcare business — start-up or expanding — that creates additional childcare slots. The minimum grant is $1,000 for five new slots provided, with an additional $200 for each additional slot created up to 10.

Funds can be used for a variety of purposes such as child safety, household safety, active play equipment, egress windows, fencing for play areas and household alarms.

To qualify, childcare businesses must be located within Hutchinson city limits.

'The cost to launch or expand a childcare business can run into the thousands of dollars — this program will help make things a little easier," Mike McGraw, EDA board president, said in a news release.

According to a study conducted by First Children’s Finance, a childcare advocacy group, Hutchinson needs approximately 400 additional childcare slots. Program information, along with grant application materials, is available by calling Hutchinson Economic Development Director Miles Seppelt at 320-234-4223.
