Voters headed to the polls in big numbers Tuesday, with election judges reporting brisk business throughout the day.

Litchfield city voters all cast their ballots at the Church of St. Philip.

Though midterm elections often don’t draw the enthusiasm and participation of a presidential election year, this year’s election had a different feel — and expectation for higher turnout — both locally and nationally.

In Litchfield, three candidates — incumbent Mayor Keith Johnson, and council members Darlene Kotelnicki and Ron Dingmann — were vying for mayor. Wards 1 and 5 also had contests.

Meanwhile, four candidates — incumbents Darrin Anderson, Greg Mathews and Marcia Provencher, and newcomer Dan Hansen — were vying for three seats on the Litchfield School Board.

Meanwhile state races, including governor, attorney general, secretary of state, and Minnesota House, along with congressional and U.S. Senate races offered plenty of choices in the voting booth.
