Kyle Greene campaign video

A state representative candidate is drawing significant attention for the racial slur he makes in his own campaign video.

Kyle Greene, an Independent, is running in House District 18A, where he is challenging Republican incumbent Rep. Dean Urdahl and DFL candidate Justin Vold.

“I want to be your state representative, I want to be your public servant, and I want to be your (N-word),” Greene says in the video, which is posted on his campaign website and his Facebook page.

The video on his Facebook page drew 57 comments and was shared 179 times as of Thursday afternoon. Some of the comments questioned whether it was a skit, or a ploy to gain attention. Others seemed to disbelieve what they had heard.

In replying to one commenter who asked “can you confirm does your video say ‘I want to be your neighbor’ or ‘I want to be your n****’” Greene simply posted a link to a story by the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune, which included the headline, “Minnesota House candidate Kyle Greene uses racial slur in ad.”

Earlier this year, Greene ran against Vold for the DFL endorsement for the 18A seat.

Greene, who says he moved to Litchfield in 1989 from Minneapolis, identifies himself as mixed race, part African-American, white and Cherokee Indian. He now lives on a farm near Grove City, where he is an organic farmer, “raising chickens, ducks, goats and soon adding sheep,” according to his campaign website.

He and his wife, Krystle, have been married for 10 years and they have six children.
