Hutchinson featured a lightning-strike offensive attack as it rolled past Princeton 40-8 Friday at S.R. Knutson Field at Rostberg Stadium.
The Tigers built a 34-0 halftime lead behind three scoring plays of 40-plus yards, the first— and longest — coming via a 68-yard run by Nathan Thode late in the first quarter. And before the quarter was over, they put up another sudden strike as quarterback Logan Butler hit Kaden Butler for a 43-yard score.
Hutchinson entered the game with a 4-2 record, one of two two-loss teams among state’s Class 4A top 10, in the fifth spot. Princeton, meanwhile, was unbeaten at 6-0 and ranked No. 3 in Class 4A.
Hutchinson’s back-to-back losses, in the fourth and fifth games of the season, came when its lineup was less than full strength, and both came at the hands of state-ranked teams, including No. 1-ranked Becker.
Princeton was the fourth state-ranked opponent the Tigers have faced this season — the second they’ve beaten, following a win over Totino-Grace in the season’s third game.
The Butler-to-Butler scoring connection was the only completed pass of the night for Hutchinson. But when you’re running roughshod the way the Tigers were, you don’t need to pass.
Hutchinson racked up 329 yards on the ground on 37 carries — an impressive 8.9 yards per carry.
Thode and Carter Verhasselt led the way for Hutchinson ground game. Thode carried 12 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns, while Verhasselt had 126 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown.
Davontay Parker and Ethan Lenz led the Hutchinson defense with 11 and 10 tackles each. Parker Peterson added nine.
Hutchinson closes the regular season against Holy Angels at 7 p.m. Wednesday at home.
Entering that game, the Tigers are tied with Marshall and New Ulm for the best record in the six-team Section 2AAAA. Seedings for the section playoffs will be done after completion of Wednesday’s games.
