Most of us have seen the demise of vibrant middle-class communities due to population shifts from any one of a multitude of economic, environmental or logistical influences. I am not naive enough to think that my opinion and wishes can make a difference to move the pendulum in any one direction.
It is my opinion, however, that when the suggestion of drafting a resolution that becomes a municipal document gets this much pushback by the community, (“Welcoming resolution causes stir,” Nov. 29 Leader), the Hutchinson City Council should take notice. To continue on the present course of action appears to me to be an obvious overreach of authority.
Is this an attempt to initiate dissent and divisiveness within the community for personal political gain? No one would deny that it is the responsibility of our elected councilmen to represent all the residents without regard for sexual orientation, race, country of origin and so on. What I see, however, is that there are fears being realized within our communities; that the cultural values of the majority are being overshadowed by the loud vitriol of the minority.
Sometimes actions have unintended consequences. I beg our City Council to consider all the possible effects to the community with initiating this bold resolution. I ask them to look beyond their own personal goals to do what is best for the majority.
Why upset the apple cart? Is this a good marketing strategy for the city of Hutchinson? Are you demonstrating that you really respect and value the sacrifices and needs of our current residents?
