Hutchinson’s brand new aquatic center made a splash this past weekend when it opened to crowds of families eager to try the new lazy river, water slide and zipline.
“My husband and boys just got home from the new aquatic center,” Jennifer Haugan Ceynar of Silver Lake posted online Saturday, the day of the grand opening. “I asked my son, ‘How was it?’ He said, ‘Two words Mom. It’s. Amazing.’ So nice to have such a fun family place in the area.”
They also complimented the staff for being so friendly.
Saturday’s grand opening came after a year of construction on the $5.9 million facility at 900 Harrington St. S.W. Despite an early setback — heavy rain in August caused the lap pool to float from where it had been poured — the pool opened about when Hutchinson’s Parks and Recreation Department expected.
The facility includes a lap pool, shallow pool, diving boards, zip line, rock climbing, a lazy river, water slides, a concession stand and more.
Though Saturday was the grand opening, eager swimmers were able to check the pool out the day before during a “soft opening.” That gave lifeguards and other staff a chance to train before the big day, and due to a storm in the early evening, the team was able to test its safety plan.
The pool opens daily from 5:30 to 9 a.m. for fitness time, lap swimming and river walking. Rentals are available from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. Daily open swim is from noon to 8 p.m.
